Midtown Freeway Expansion

The Midtown Freeway is an important part of our community and one that we should all be proud to have. The project has always been intended to help ease congestion in and around Midtown, but during the last few years there has been an increase in demand for the existing highway system as well as the potential for additional improvements that could impact traffic enough to require additional revenue. The cost of the project is estimated to be around $241 million dollars. Of this figure, $120 million will come from the Federal Government and $53 million will come from the Provincial Government. According to preliminary estimates from the Metropolis Transportation Institute, the Midtown Freeway Project will result in an increase in freight movements through the City and into surrounding communities. A new northern section of the Metropolis Freeway is already open for use and other major projects such as a rebuild of the southern segment also continue today.
